Dysphagia | Swallowing disorders. [Dr. Jerilyn Logemann: dysphagia is “any difficulty in moving food from the mouth to the stomach.”] |
Deglutition | Swallowing |
Penetration | Entry of food or liquid into the larynx at some level down to but not below the true vocal cords |
Aspiration | Entrance of anything ingested by mouth, secretions (saliva or mucus), or refluxed or regurgitated stomach contents into the laryngeal vestibule and below the level of the true vocal folds. |
Silent Aspiration | Penetration of food, liquid, or saliva to the subglottic area without the elicitation of a cough. |
Mastication | Chewing |
Bolus | Cohesive mass of food or liquid to be swallowed |
