Dysphagia

Swallowing disorders. [Dr. Jerilyn Logemann: dysphagia is “any difficulty in moving food from the mouth to the stomach.”]

Penetration

Entry of food or liquid into the larynx at some level down to but not below the true vocal cords

Aspiration

Entrance of anything ingested by mouth, secretions (saliva or mucus), or refluxed or regurgitated stomach contents into the laryngeal vestibule and below the level of the true vocal folds.

Silent Aspiration

Penetration of food, liquid, or saliva to the subglottic area without the elicitation of a cough. 

Mastication

Chewing

Bolus

Cohesive mass of food or liquid to be swallowed
