Ice chip protocol: Using ice chip for initial swallowing assessment
- General Flow:
Targeted population: patient with reduced use/ non-use of swallow
Pre-requisite: patient alert, able to sit upright
Why ice chip?
1. Small controllable volume (~1ml/ ice)
2. Cohesive bolus (easily manipulated)
3. Cold (stimulate termal/tactile/chemoreceptors)
4. Relatively benign if aspirated
5. Aspiration of ice chips is predictive of aspiration on thin liquids
Take away: Ice chip protocol ...
👉🏻Can be used to Ax swallowing ability, and to "wake up" swallowing system of patient
👉🏻Leads to Improvement in amount of secretion and location in pharynx (perform under FEES for more detailed assessment!)
